Overview

The Arturia MiniBrute is a compact analog monophonic synthesizer first released in 2012. It features a single oscillator with multiple simultaneously available waveforms, a sub-oscillator, a noise source, a Steiner-Parker multimode filter, and an arpeggiator, packaged in a small two-octave keyboard.

Origin & History

Arturia is a French company that built its early reputation on software emulations of vintage synthesizers. The MiniBrute was the company’s first major hardware synthesizer, and its release coincided with a wider revival of interest in true analog instruments. The choice of a Steiner-Parker filter — historically rare and associated with the Synthacon synthesizer of the 1970s — gave the MiniBrute a sonic identity distinct from the more common Moog and Roland filter designs.

How It’s Played

The MiniBrute is played from its built-in 25-key keyboard or controlled externally over MIDI or CV/Gate. All waveforms (sawtooth, square, triangle, sub) are available at once and can be mixed in any combination, allowing rapid sound shaping with no menu diving. The “Brute Factor” feedback control adds a controlled overdrive that gives the instrument its characteristic aggressive edge.

Cultural Significance

The MiniBrute is often credited with helping to revive a market for affordable, hands-on analog synthesizers. Its success led to a broader Brute family, including the larger MicroBrute and MatrixBrute, and contributed to a wave of small-format analog instruments from many manufacturers in the years that followed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MiniBrute a true analog synthesizer?
Yes. The signal path is fully analog, although MIDI and arpeggiator timing are handled digitally.

What is the Steiner-Parker filter?
A multimode analog filter design originally used in the 1970s Synthacon synthesizer, with a distinctive resonant character.

How many notes can the MiniBrute play at once?
One. It is a monophonic synthesizer, intended for lead and bass lines rather than chords.
