Overview

The Yamaha CS-15 is a duophonic analog synthesizer released in 1979 as part of Yamaha’s mid- and late-1970s CS family. Rather than offering a single oscillator or a polyphonic architecture, it provides two complete synth signal paths — each with its own oscillator, filter, envelope, and amplifier — that can be played independently or stacked. The 37-key keyboard and the two-channel layout make it a flexible monosynth that can also produce simple two-note textures.

Origin & History

The CS line began with the CS-80 and CS-60 polyphonic synthesizers in 1976, before branching into a range of smaller monosynths and duophonic instruments in the late 1970s. The CS-15 arrived alongside the CS-5, CS-10, and CS-30 as part of that mid-price lineup. Production continued into the early 1980s; like most analogue instruments of the period, the CS line gave way within Yamaha’s own catalogue to the digital DX series after 1983.

How It’s Played

The performer uses the front-panel sliders to edit the two channels independently. A voice-mode switch selects single-channel or duophonic operation. In duophonic mode, the highest and lowest notes held on the keyboard are assigned to the two channels, which allows the player to hold a bass note while playing a melody with the same hand — an unusual ability for a small instrument of this era.

Cultural Significance

The CS-15 is prized for the raw, bright voice that the rest of the CS family shares, and has been used as a bass, lead, and effects synth in electronic, pop, and film music. It sits at a more affordable price point than the CS-80 but with a recognisably related character.
