Overview

The Yamaha Montage is a flagship music workstation released by Yamaha in 2016. It combines two independent synth engines — AWM2 sample-based synthesis inherited from the Motif series, and FM-X, a newly designed eight-operator frequency-modulation engine derived from the DX line — under a single performance-oriented interface called Motion Control. The result is an instrument that can run classic bread-and-butter sampled voices and complex evolving FM patches side by side in the same performance.

Origin & History

The Montage replaced the Motif line, which had been Yamaha’s flagship since 2001. The addition of FM-X re-introduced eight-operator FM synthesis at a commercial price after decades in which such an engine had only been accessible through classic DX hardware or software emulation. A second generation, the Montage M, arrived in 2023, adding a polyphonic aftertouch keyboard, expanded voice count, and virtual analog synthesis.

How It’s Played

The instrument is played from a 61-, 76-, or 88-key keyboard with aftertouch; a large central colour touchscreen drives the interface. “Motion Control” lets the performer assign knobs, sliders, and sequencer-driven envelopes to sweep multiple parameters at once, reshaping the live sound in real time. Performances can stack up to 16 parts and are stored in a large internal library plus expansion slots.

Cultural Significance

The Montage has become a standard reference workstation in modern pop, film, and theatre production and is often used as a central keyboard on large stages. Its reintroduction of FM-X also influenced Yamaha’s smaller Reface and MODX lines, which share elements of the same engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What synthesis does the Montage use?
AWM2 sample-based synthesis and FM-X eight-operator FM, together.

Is Motion Control software or hardware?
It is a control layer that combines hardware knobs and ribbons with a software assignment system.

Is it a stand-alone instrument or a MIDI controller?
Both — it is a full workstation that also functions as a high-end MIDI controller.
