Overview

The Fender Bullet is a student-grade solid-body electric guitar produced by Fender in the early 1980s. It was designed as a replacement for older student models such as the Musicmaster and Mustang, with a short scale length, a simple two-pickup wiring layout, and lower production costs. The Bullet is one of Fender’s lesser-known guitars, but it has its own small following among players who like an unfussy, lightweight electric.

Origin & History

Fender introduced the Bullet in 1981, initially built in the United States and then in Asia after the model was redesigned. Several variants were produced over a few years: short-scale and full-scale versions, single-cut and double-cut bodies, and a Bullet Bass companion. The line was discontinued in the mid 1980s, although the Bullet name has been revived occasionally since for low-cost Squier instruments aimed at beginners.

How It’s Played

The Bullet is played like any other Fender-style solid-body electric guitar: held against the body, fretted with the left hand, and picked or fingerpicked with the right. The short scale gives a slightly looser feel and slightly mellower tone than a full-scale Stratocaster, and the simple two-pickup layout offers enough tonal range for most rock, pop, and indie playing.

Cultural Significance

The Bullet’s main role has been as a practical first electric guitar for many players. Its short production run as a US-made model gives original examples some collector interest, while the later Squier-branded Bullets continue Fender’s long history of providing low-cost entry points to its guitar family.
