Overview

The Fender TC 90 was a short-lived electric guitar built around a Telecaster-shaped body fitted with two soapbar P-90 pickups. It marries Fender’s familiar Tele silhouette with the larger, fatter single-coil voice traditionally associated with vintage Gibson instruments, offering a hybrid voice unlike either a standard Telecaster or a Les Paul Special.

Origin & History

Fender introduced the TC 90 in the late 1990s as part of an “Alternate Reality” line that paired classic Fender bodies with non-traditional pickup configurations. The model used a thinline (semi-hollow) Telecaster body with a single f-hole, paired with two cream-coloured soapbar P-90 pickups, a tune-o-matic-style bridge, and a Strat-style headstock variant. Production was modest and the model was withdrawn after a relatively short run.

How It’s Played

Played like a thinline Telecaster — slightly lighter than a solid Tele due to internal chambering, with bolt-on neck and Tele-style controls. The P-90 pickups deliver more midrange thickness than standard Tele single-coils, with a slightly grittier response that suits blues, indie rock, and roots music. The semi-hollow construction adds a touch of acoustic resonance without significantly increasing feedback at typical stage volumes.

Cultural Significance

The TC 90 is a small but interesting entry in Fender’s catalogue: a deliberate cross-pollination with Gibson-style pickups in a Fender body, decades before such configurations became routine in custom-shop and boutique builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the TC 90 a hollow body?
Semi-hollow — chambered like a Telecaster Thinline, with one f-hole.

Why P-90s instead of Tele single-coils?
P-90s give a fatter, more midrange-heavy voice than standard Tele pickups, expanding the instrument’s tonal range.
