Overview
The Fender Telecaster Thinline is a semi-hollow version of the classic electric guitar. It looks much like a standard Telecaster but with a single curved f-hole on the upper bout, signalling that part of the body is hollowed out underneath. The result is a lighter instrument with a slightly airier and more resonant tone than the solid-body original.
Origin & History
Fender introduced the Thinline in 1968 partly to address weight problems with available ash and alder timber at the time. The first version retained the standard pair of single-coil Telecaster pickups. In 1972, Fender released a second Thinline variant fitted with two Wide Range humbuckers designed by Seth Lover, the engineer who had earlier designed the original humbucker. That “72 Thinline” became one of the era’s most distinctive Fender designs and has been continuously revived.
How It’s Played
The Thinline is played in the standard electric-guitar position. The semi-hollow body slightly softens the attack and adds resonance compared with a fully solid Telecaster, but the overall feel and scale length remain the same. The single-coil version retains the bright, snappy Telecaster voice; the humbucker version gives a thicker and warmer sound suited to a different range of styles.
Cultural Significance
The Thinline has appealed to players who want the Telecaster’s familiar feel with a lighter weight or a different tonal flavour. The 1972 Wide Range humbucker version in particular has been adopted across rock, alternative, and indie genres, used by artists from Elvis Costello to a long list of contemporary players. It remains one of Fender’s most recognisable variants.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Telecaster Thinline a hollow-body guitar?
It is semi-hollow: part of the body is chambered, but it is not a fully hollow guitar.
What is the difference between the 1968 and 1972 Thinlines?
The 1968 version uses standard Telecaster single-coil pickups; the 1972 version uses two Wide Range humbuckers and has a different overall sound.
Is the Thinline lighter than a standard Telecaster?
Yes. The chambered body reduces the overall weight noticeably.
